WEEK14 21052014-RERLEKSI DIRI (WONG CHEW LIN)

PRESENTATION:

You will be expected to talk about "What you have learned throughout this process".
Content of discussion should be about below (marking point will be given according to these):

your failure in finding the right design solution, the materials, etc.
  1.  Selection of theme. From 'Happy bin' change to 'can lah'. As 'CAN LAH' means can is our found materials and 'lah' is malaysian slang. 'Can lah' also means our project is workable, friendly, localize, and creativity. Why no using 'Happy bin'? It is becouse we relieze that the little dustbin is too ugly when we test it along the street and hang it on the tree. So, we change 'Happy bin' to 'Can lah' to brings messange which 'Can lah' aims to maintains cleanliness in Georgetown.
  2.  About the found materials At the beginning, all of us still in the mood finding the best solution to brings the messange about our project which to create alertness about the problems of litter at Georgetown. We collect some plastic cup and can as our found materials. But, all of us haven't found anything as reference to paint on our dustbins. Then we try color it by using water color and also paint by using arcylic color so that it will looks like a bin. The resuly seems bad. At the last, we change our strategy which we spray the cans by using 3 color which is red, blue and yellow. After that, we print out the sticker design and paste it on the can.
  3. Logo design

the struggle that you have faced
  1. Time Manangement yay. I think most of the people will face the same common issue with me. Sometimes, we gonna to stay up late to discuss and think what we have to do next even though we lost like lack of of idea. I conffess that sometimes I failed to arrange my time for the 'can lah' project, especially we needs to meet up to do mock up etc. Sometimes, I can't make it which the date that the need to meet up for meeting, it crack with my class. I really feel sorry as we are working in a team. But, I know, you are not alone as we are a team!

the teamwork communication breakdown

I think I don`t have facing the problems of communication breakdown as we are helping each others. We are willing to giving and receive what we have go through along this 14 weeks for our 'can lah' project at Georgetown, Penang.

the management of the team

the testing process, the choice of prototype

Typographic stickers with stop littering slogans were pasted on the cans. The sticker design was then developed to imitations of existing soft drinks logos but it still conveys the stop littering message. From far, the cans still resemble the original cans but when the public come close to take a look, the slogans can be easily readable. The method allows the slogans and message to blend naturally into the cans and this is a visual communication achievement.

the turning point of the project
 ... ...

the most memorable moments that you have gone through in this project
  1. Debate First of all, i always think about this project is a bit like debate. Becouse we gonna argue with our client which is Dr. Nurul. I think this is the fun part for me. Between, it is looks like big surprise for us as we don`t know what will asking and questioning by Dr. Nurul. All of us just be ready and prepared what we gonna face next. Just learn to keep calm and be steady!
  2. Get Closer We know that we come from different course as I am Fine Art student and they are Graphic Communication course. We get closer and know each others becouse of this project. It is very fun to get know well of them.
  3. Target Total cost for this project only cost us around RM86 which include the printing, materials like paper/ mounting board etc....

what is fun about this project and most importantly
  1. We can interact with public and get respond from the public is positive!
  2. We go through together all the difficulties and solve the problems even all of us looks like zombie as we already didn`t sleep.

how you think your project can give happiness to Georgetown?

Without litter, we can live happy and healhty.

03052014 design solution part 8: logo design (idea develoment)

03052014 (Saturday)

logo can be colorful but still simple and  elegant or fun.

some design of logo for our project 'can lah' (idea development)

30042014 design solution: part 7 first things first (questioning?find solution)

1st thing to be done:

refining our sticker design using AI (strictly no photoshop) - theme: resembling existing soft drinks brand logos by deriving their colors and fonts

2nd thing:

print out on water proof paper? and stick nicely on the cans, might need to refine the cans' surface also (spray nicely and evenly)

3rd thing:

before 16th may, test again around campus, maybe different locations

4th thing:

PROJECT NAME + LOGO

5th thing:

change the string we use to hang cans from yarns to fishing line and also add bells to the cans to make it sound

6th thing:

think of a method to provide information about our project to the public at the location that we choose (posters not recommended, too mainstream)

7th thing:

A2 print out and A5 booklet

questioning ourself:

1st thing

issit possible for us to get super duper big bottle/tin?
then the biggest tin put our information

2nd thing

do we need to print on sticker???? because the budjet is high, and as i understand nurul asked us about our current sticker price so that's mean she is ok with that printing. (think so )

3rd thing

ok, we test on the 'iron fence' dekat kata sila, if got time we find another tree and public place ( foyer or anywhere with tree)

4th thing

name dunno but logo can use colourful tin combine to make a shape like camo (khalidah group for design management

Design solution : Part 6 Mock-up N testing + Display

idea giving (1)

mock-up for our design n project 'can lah':

2) knives
3) scissors
4) masking tape

27042014(Sunday) Design solution Part 6: Sticker Design (Decision making n idea development)

27042014 ( Sunday)

Main point:
We need to come out with the sticker design as we are running out of time!!!!

Messange:

- Are we confirm with typographic sticker? Means only plain text?

-Except from plain text any better suggestion ?

We always argue each others and trying to find the best solution for sticker design)
- Sticker design need be more outstanding.

We always questioning ourself: How? Why?

At the end, one thing with the can design, I think as long as our message is clearly seen, any color for sticker also can, we can test around, not just follow her. (decision making)
If we are going to print 10 stickers, maybe put 3 main slogans, but a few colors and designs. (questioning ourself again...possible or not?)

Create sticker design template :

Sofware: Adobe Illustator CS6

28042014 (Monday)

- We test at art school first only then depart to georgetown.
- Red, yellow and blue spray paint finally bought from Mr. DIY.
- Problems that discovering:
  1. Got some sunflower and 4 untouched cans.
  2. mock up needs to be done before 29042014(Tuesday). So, we need to bring mounting board or modeling board
  3. I know but we never know. sometimes got surprises. i hate surprises in class... T.T
  4. Location meet up: 10am at School of the Art, usm.

 Some Sticker Design (idea development):

Our idea is using the can design to design the sticker.

But, Nur Khalidah  argue that it is not an good idea as it is about the matter of copyright. (SUE!???) (always think further and the consequences)

Finally, in the end, we accept the idea and then trying to design it like paste on can so that it will looks like the can and the font used is the coca cola font.

OR

Its like...
- using 100 plus background do cola sticker...
- use cola sticker do 100 plus background...
- try remaining the font and design of the brand, and also change the color. (try to export the sticker design to PDF so that color won't 'run')
(suggestion n discuss. always try to strike the best!!)

Design solution: part 5 talk about our sticker design (idea)

27042014 (Sunday)

We have two options for the sticker, either print in round shape/normal rectangle shape

If rectangle shape, we will make the height as 3 inches and for the width, we gonna to make it longer ,so that it can cover the tin like 360 degree.

p/s:
Dr nurul suggested us to cover the original surface of the tin, if we remain the tin and add sticker on it, might look messy, and the message cannot be seen from far.

Dr Nurul doesn't really support the idea of putting white background and colored text for the sticker. So, our plan is to spray and paint the can, then only put sticker on it.

How about the measurement of the can's sticker?

The measurement of can = 4.5 in height and 8.5 in for its circumference.
or
If we set the sticker measurement as 3 in height and 8.5 in width?

How about the color?

1) 3 choice which was red, blue, and yellow.
2) And, yellow can be used for sunflower can.
3) 3 colors (red, blue and yellow), each of them cost RM5.90 and we gonna bought it at Mr. DIY, Penang.

Design solution : part 4 always plan well ( Plan A or B)

What is you plan? Plan play an important roles to be more successful in life. I think we can draw up a tentative plan now. Aims to show the process of our ideas development.

24042014 (Thusday)

1)  Chew lin's sketches.
2)  All of us gonna to think of a name for our project as well.

3) Khalidah's happy bin slides just keep it from the beginning and we will insert in our documentation as well.
4) Collect cans.

 25042014 (Friday) - 27042014 (Sunday)

1) Sticker design in AI.

  • Bin it
  • Fight Dirty
  • Stop Litter
2) Buy spray paint.
3) Print out sticker.
4) Photoshop mock up on pokok and street and print out.

28042014 (Monday)

1) Paste sticker on cans, paste mock up on mounting board, go georgetownt test outcome and take photo for documentation
2) We will be testing on two locations, both the pokok and this street side.

23042014: design solution part 3 talk about our progress...

Date 23042014

http://vrk223sem2mohammadazley.blogspot.com/
This is one of the blogs that she showed us, what she wants is something like this, the group doing wishing tree, they already went to test and take photos, which is kinda what we need to show her.
Besides getting our prototypes ready, we need to also think of how we are going to display our prototype during rintis.

Some groups used modeling board and foam board for their design prototype which looks very neat and professional

we shall decide which direction to go asap and start already...

Messange:
Guys, we are very left behind for our project.

Next wednesday, we need to comfirm the prototype of our project ( or mock up), and need to test it in georgetown/similar location.

In week 14, we need to submit 4 things-1. A2 size outline including image, text and design brief to show the whole process( include best artwork and sketches etc)

2. documentation (in group) of the images etc

3. Only good design prototypes will be chosen to be displayed during rintis exhibition in studio graphic-this assures good grades, if not chosen means not good grades

4. Blog (individual) to be marked in week 14

Today we are supposed to show her our progress but I only brought the tin lantern that I cut, I don't think she'll accept it so I didn't ask her further...

DESIGN SOLUTION PART 2 : again...STRUGGLE! STRUGGLE! STRUGGLE!

All of us still in the mood finding the best solution to brings the messange about our project which to create alertness about the problems of litter at Georgetown.

here are the some messange that we have discoverd together:

18042014_week 9 Lecture`s Notes n Read ( 'why prototyping is important in design process')

This week was particullarly interesting as some of you have came out with a very interesting prototype of your design project. Some still working on it and some are still in the process of refining the outcome. What ever it is I need to emphasis the improtant of designing your prototyping process and it is a process that you should never skip in your design process regardless in what ever design practices that you are in.

Lecture's Note on The importance of Designing the Prototype in the design process.

when you stop reading, you stop being excellent!
Dont stop reading...

Read Articles:

1. Why Designers Should Never Go To A Meeting Without Prototype?

2. Why Prototyping is Essential to Your Design Process?

Never forget to TEST the prototype in the real world and see the impact of your product (at the moment it is your prototype) can do. If it is a successful one then start looking for the problem. FIND the ERRORS because remember nothing is perfect.

Lastly remember to alway enjoy the process and document it.

14042014 VIA DESIGN SOLUTION PART 2 : STRUGGLE! STRUGGLE! STRUGGLE!

14/04/2014 (MONDAY)

Messange:

Tomorrow 5pm (after typography class) we need to meet up to do the mock up of our little dustbins. Pleas bring along paint materials, recycled materials and reference picture for painting. Will figure out if we will include any text or purely visual on the dustbins. After that, we will photoshop the dustbins onto the picture of our location in georgetown.

Please also note that we need to get ready with all these by wednesday morning, so try to do together.

16/04/2014 (WEDNESDAY)

Messange:

- Mineral water bottle also okay, cut into half
- We show her at least 4 designs on friday, she said we got 4 heads
- Chew lin i think you have all the painting materials so you can do one and bring during tutorial class.

17/04/2014 (WEDNESDAY)

Messange:

idea (1)

-it looks like a sunflower with a happy face!

idea (2)

reason: we didnt pick it as it looks nice but a bit hard to do the mock up.

part 1: design solution 'happy bin'

At the beginning, we are 8 person in one team.

But
in the end, we decide divide into 4 person in a group
as Dr. Nurul feel too many person in a group is not a better way.

First, we called 'Happy Bin' for our project.
Location that we chosen which it could be empty space or wall or some creative spots.
In my points, i think that creative spots that people will never thought of being able to be used for this kind of project.

- some simple sketches about some poping idea when discussing with the teamates about the project.
- First, we think about our theme which is `happy bin`. We wanna distort the dustbin with messange but at the end, this idea was rejected.
- At the last, we wanna make it simple, save cost and effective. Then, we think about can and bottle. We decide pick the cans as our found materials. And we perform it just by using yarn to hang it on our eye levels sign at the location that chosen.

- All of us haven't found anything as reference to paint on our dustbins
- After discuss, we try using arcylic or water color to test on surface of the cans or plastic cup.
- Green color was color by using water color on plastic cup. But, it really look ugly and it doesn`t work if hang it on tress as the trees already green color.
- Middle can and right can which paint by arcylic color also can`t accepted.
- The typo looks BORING and messy at all.
- All of this are the problems that discovering such as the materials that used to paint on it, the color that we chosen, and also the typo.
